If you're a woman over 40, getting a mammogram to screen for breast cancer is something doctors recommend you should do. But not everyone thinks this is a good idea. Some believe radiation from the x-ray exam could cause cancer in other parts of the body. Now research shows that is simply not true.
A study released by the Radiological Society of North America states cancer risk from the exam is small compared to chance for death if you don't get a mammogram. Researchers said risks of side effects from breast exam radiation should never be a reason not to get a mammogram.
