SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Utah) - The Salt Lake City Police Department has encouraged the public to take preventative safety measures to ensure a happy holiday and summer experience.

The department reminded Utahns to keep their homes safe by stopping home deliveries including mail which may make your home a target.  Officers also said when on vacation, avoid hitchhikers and carrying large sums of cash.

When riding a bike, plan your route and make sure someone knows where you will be going.  Also, remember to always carry identification and a helmet.

Officers said to prevent car burglaries hid your valuables, keep your car visible, and always roll up your windows.

Last but not least, the Salt Lake Police Department said, parents should talk to their children about safety.  For tips click here.
