SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Taylorsville man has been charged with driving under the influence and dragging a Utah High Patrol trooper in a construction zone.

John Coleman Unker was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with aggravated assault, failure to respond to an officer's signal and DUI in the Aug. 29 incident.

Police say the trooper approached Unker's truck as it entered the construction zone near 7200 S. State St. and noticed the driver smelled strongly of alcohol and had slurred speech.

Charging documents say Unker refused to exit the vehicle and sped off, dragging Lt. Robert Anderson about 10 feet until he was able to free himself by using his flashlight to collapse the passenger-side mirror.

Documents say Unker later returned to the scene and told police he had "maybe 12 beers."
