SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – Police and loved ones said their final goodbyes Friday to fallen Draper police Sgt. Derek Johnson. A graveside service was held at Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery. Law enforcement officers honored his life, his service, and mourned his untimely death.

Friday loved ones and many of Utah's finest gave their final salute to Draper police Sgt. Derek Johnson.

"I could not ask for a better tribute for my brother," said Darin Johnson, brother.

Johnson was shot and killed Sunday while making a check on a car parked in the Draper area. The Johnson family watched in awe as thousands of spectators, including many from the Draper community, lined the funeral motorcade before it arrived at the cemetery in Sandy.

"Coming here, my gosh, it was heart wrenching, ya know, it tugged at our hearts as we came through," said Randy Johnson, father.

Police presented Sgt. Johnson's widow, young son, and others, with the flag, as a symbol, honoring a hero for his sacrifice.

As a tradition, when radio dispatchers called out Johnson's number and he didn't respond, many couldn't hold back the tears as Johnson was officially relieved of duty.

"Draper 8, Sgt. Derek Johnson we thank you for your dedication, loyalty and service to the citizens of Draper, Utah, and the United States. You made the people you served your family," said the dispatcher.

Friday night Sgt. Johnson's family can finally say goodbye.

"My brother lays to rest with a beautiful view and lived a valiant life," said Darin Johnson.
