Construction worker killed in roof collapse in Brigham City

BRIGHAM CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - One man is dead after a building he was preparing to tear down in Brigham City partially collapsed.

As you might imagine, it's been a sobering day for Reynolds Excavation, Demolition & Utilities.

"As a company we're very saddened for the employee and his family," said Jory Argyle, Reynolds Excavation, Demolition & Utilities Spokesperson.

You can hear the emotion in Jory Argyle's voice. Tuesday afternoon a sub contractor lost his life helping Reynolds Excavation demolish the old Kmart building on Main St. in Brigham City.

"He was in quite a bit of debris," said Capt. Michael Young, Brigham City Fire Dept.

Fire Fighters said the construction worker who died was one of four men preparing to tear down a section of the roof. He was the only one inside, when suddenly the roof collapsed.

"It was a roof demolition, it was supposed to happen, but I think what happened was it came down a little sooner than they anticipated, and it caught him off guard," said Young.

Emergency responders searched through the rubble for over an hour, but when they finally found him, he was dead. Reynolds Excavation won't say who he was or why the roof gave way, but claim they'll help investigators get to the bottom of it.

"As a general contractor on the site we are committed to fully cooperating with the authorities as they conduct their investigation," said Argyle.

As of Tuesday evening, crews did not know why the roof collapsed so suddenly, but more information may be coming forward on Wednesday. ABC 4 is told an OSHA Inspector is scheduled to look at the site Wednesday morning.
