SOUTH SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Larry R. Aullman who is a 57-year-old man from Salt Lake City died on Wednesday after a TRAX light rail train crashed into his vehicle -- and pushed it roughly 120 feet down the track, officials said.

The train was crossing at 2950 South and 200 West when authorities say the man somehow drove onto the tracks. Crossing arms, the siren and flashing lights were all functioning normally, officials said. It's unclear how the man drove onto the rails, but investigators believe that he either drove around the crossing arms or underneath them while they were going down.

The train was traveling between 45-50 miles per hour when it struck the vehicle, and pushed the vehicle 120 feet down the tracks before it came to a full stop. Approximately 50 people were riding the train at the time of the accident, officials said.

Investigators said the crossing arms and warning sounds/lights had been active for approximately 20 seconds before the collision occurred.

Emergency crews needed extrication equipment to cut the man out of the car. He was taken to the hospital in very critical condition, officials said. No one on the train was hurt.

Commuters on board the train were diverted to other shuttles while crews cleaned up the wreckage.
