The incident happened on Saturday night when the robber walked into the El Rey Del Pollo restaurant.
A worker was talking to a friend outside when the robber held up the restaurant and then ran outside.
“I ran after him as did my employee and my friend but at that moment, I didn't know he was armed,” said Orlando, the worker. He did not want to be identified by his real name.
The suspect turned around with the gun pointed at Orlando as he closed in on the robber.
“I saw that he took out his gun and started shooting,” Orlando said. “The first two shots he took, the gun misfired. On the third try I saw the bullet heading my way and he shot me in the leg.”
The bullet hit near Orlando’s calf. It went in one end and came out the other, but it did not break any bone.
“He shot at all of us, not just me,” Orlando added. “I was already on the ground and I'm just grateful no one else was hit.”
The suspect already got away when police arrived after a 911 call.
The workers did not have a good look at the suspect. Orlando said the robber had a bandana on and a hoodie but was a Latino who spoke fluent Spanish.
Orlando is now recovering from his injury. He is going back to work when he has fully recovered.
“I'm not scared, I didn't do anything wrong to anyone,” he said. “I have to keep working to keep my family fed.”
