Police say the 40 year-old woman was walking home alone around 8:15 p.m. and didn't know her attacker.
It happened in a driveway behind Faustina Restaurant. Police say a man approached her from behind with a weapon. "She felt what she described as punches, turned out later she was being attacked with a sharp weapon,” said Detective Dennis McGowan, SLPD.
Police said the woman fought back and was able to get away.
"She fought this person and struggled hard, yelled out and the person fled,” said McGowan.
The woman ran into Faustina and asked for help. The owner of Faustina said a doctor dining at the restaurant was able to help her while his employees called 911.
"They were pretty shaken up,” said Jared Young, owner of Faustina. They were just doing their job serving guests and they next thing a woman came in with blood down the side of her which is pretty startling.”
The woman was taken to a hospital with injuries to her neck and face, but is expected to be okay.
Police say the woman did everything right, yelling for help and fighting back, but they say it's a good reminder to always take precautions.
"This was 8:15 downtown Salt Lake City and this person was alone, so we urge everyone whenever they are out and about alone especially to be alert to your surroundings and what's going on around you,” said McGowan.
Not a lot of information is known about the suspect, only that he is a white or Hispanic male between 5'6 and 5'8 in height.
Detectives are investigating, but as yet they have been unable to come up with a motive.
