Murray, Utah - (ABC 4 Utah)- 34 million Americans will hit the road this Labor Day weekend according to AAA. And the drivers in Utah will be greeted by state troopers. They'll work 300 overtime shifts in a three day DUI blitz.

Of course Highway Patrol is looking for all violations but here are the big three: drunk, drowsy, and speeding drivers.

I-15 is jammed packed with driers racing to get to their holiday weekend started. And some of them, literally taking off a bit too fast.

"So I'm just going to issue you a warning on that speed ok," said Utah State Trooper Grant Hyland.

It's a common violation around Labor Day. But it's the impaired drivers Utah State Troopers keep an eye out for.

"They tend to drift over the lanes, they're going side to side. Their speeds fluctuate. Their speeds go up and down," said Hyland.

Impaired drivers caused by drowsiness or drinking show up more often on holiday weekends. DUI's spike in the hundreds during the Labor Day weekend compared to only 20 or so normally. A DUI blitz across the stat hopes to lure in those drivers. But troopers like Hyland plan to pull over the rest.

"First of all the way you're driving, been drifting for a little bit. You've been crossing over those double lines. I just want to make sure you're not falling asleep or had anything to drink?'" asked Hyland.

This driver said he hadn't been drinking, but Trooper Hyland found something he calls disturbing.

"A baby on the mom's lap," said Hyland.

He says a three year old was sitting in the front of a pick-up truck without a car seat.

"I'm giving you a citation for the little boy not being in a car seat," said Hyland.

It's a mixed bag of possible citations handed out throughout the weekend. But Trooper Hyland says it's all because safety remains the top priority.

Labor Day is the third highest weekend for fatalities on Utah roads. To combat that, 300 overtime shifts will be worked over the weekend. A $5,000 grant from the New Car Dealers of Utah’s Good Wheels Foundation.
