According to police, jst prior to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded on a call of a possible shooting victim at a strip mall in the area of 3500 South 7200 West.
Police discovered a 16-year-old boy lying near the sidewalk when they arrived.
Police say the boy had multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen and legs, and medical personnel quickly transported him to a local hospital in very critical condition.
As of Thursday, police say the boy was listed in serious but stable condition.
Police say three adults have been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail in connectin with the case, including 28-year-old Brandon Carl Montoya, 22-year-old Robert Salvador Apodaca and 19-year-old Gilbert Vigil.
The trio faces attempted homicide, aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping and obstruction of justice charges.
Police say the details leading up to the shooting appear to have been a planned event, and that the three suspects arranged to meet with the boy and rob him of some illegal narcotics.
Police say the meeting took place inside a silver/blue Chevrolet Malibu, in the area of 6700 West and 3800 South.
During the robbery attempt, police say a struggle took place inside the vehicle and a handgun was produced by one of the suspects.
Police say multiple shots were fired and the boy was struck numerous times.
According to police, the suspect vehicle pulled to the side of the road at 7135 West 3500 South and the victim was pulled out by one of the suspects.
Police say the vehicle then took off with two of the suspects still inside. During the investigation, police say the suspect vehicle and handgun were recovered by detectives.
