Stray bullet barely misses WVC infant

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Police say a stray bullet from a shooting in a West Valley City restaurant parking lot nearly hit a baby in a nearby home late Saturday night.

According to a probable cause statement, witnesses reported hearing gunshots near the Mariscos de las Islitas restaurant on 3500 South 3010 West late Saturday night.

Police say a fight inside the restaurant may have spilled out into the parking lot, where the suspect fired several shots at vehicle in which three people were riding.

Police say the suspect, later identified as Edgar Flores fired 5 or 6 shots at the vehicle, one of which traveled through the walls of a nearby residence, where the bullet entered a bedroom and struck very near an infant.

At that apartment, ABC 4 News spoke with an elderly Vietnamese woman who pointed out where the bullet entered the home.  Through a translator she said a girl was sitting on the couch at the time of the shooting.  Another few inches and she could have been hit.  The bullet ended up in the wall across the room.  The elderly woman claimed that she normally sleeps on the couch at that hour but was in the back part of the apartment doing housework.

Earlier, police say Flores was inside the restaurant where he allegedly got into a fight in the bathroom.

"We didn't hear anything," says manager Yoshua Olivares.  "But one of my employees did the gunfire outside. By the time he looked towards the shooting, a green cherokee was taking off."

Olivares says no one was wounded by the shooting.

Police say Flores was arrested and booked on suspicion of 3 counts of 3rd Degree Felony Attempted Homicide, 1 count of Felony Discharge of a Firearm, 1 count of Criminal Mischief, 1 count of Possession of a Firearm Under the Influence, and one count of Assault.

Police said despite all the gunfire, no one was injured.
