Search is underway for a scrap metal bandit driving a Ken Garff truck

ROY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – The owner of an automotive repair shop in Roy says a bandit has been stealing scrap metal from him and others around the valley.
ROY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – The owner of an automotive repair shop in Roy says a bandit has been stealing scrap metal from him and others around the valley.

“Noticed I was missing some metal out of my scrap metal trailer and didn’t think anything of it, but then when I realized how much was missing I decided to go back and look at our camera,” said Jason Ohlin, Roy 66 owner.

What surveillance video revealed is a man driving a pick-up loading metal into the bed. After taking a closer look at the truck's markings and seeing it was a Ken Garff truck, Ohlin thought it'd be a slam dunk case.

“My first reaction was this is going to be pretty easy to nail down,” he said.

But not exactly.

Ohlin said he called Ken Garff and an employee there told him they sold the truck at an auction without removing the decals. Since then they've received numerous reports of someone in a Ken Garff truck stealing scrap metal across the valley.

ABC4 Utah tried to contact Ken Garff. Our calls were not immediately returned.

But Ohlin says he was told finding out who bought the truck is proving difficult.

“When they bought the truck they gave a bogus name and bogus address,” he said.

The amount of metal taken from Ohlin's business is only estimated to be worth up to $50. But he tells ABC4 the value isn't why he wants to track down the mysterious truck driver.

“It's pretty blatant that somebody is driving around in a truck that's clearly marked,” he said. “If someone is taking aluminum metal from a little shop like mine there is a good chance they’re all over the place and there is a problem throughout the valley.”

The truck is an older model of a F-150. Roy city police are investigating.
