Ogden streetcar proposal

OGDEN, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Ogden's City leaders are entering into talks about a possible streetcar connecting the Intermodal Hub in Ogden to Weber State University.

OGDEN, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Ogden's City leaders are entering into talks about a possible streetcar connecting the Intermodal Hub in Ogden to Weber State University.

The distance between the two points is about 3.75 miles, according to MapQuest.

The 603 bus route connecting the two locations is one of the busiest routes in Utah. "Standing room only and hold on tight because you're probably going to fall down," said Bus Rider Amanda Painter.

Ogden Mayor Mike Caldwell says discussions to add a street car between the two points first surfaced in the early 1990's, but nothing has materialized.

Weber State University students are driving up the passengers on this route and this is why talks are once again heating up.

Ogden City leaders and UTA would need answers to at least two questions before moving forward: How much would the project cost and how many people would use the streetcar?

Jason Hunter welcomes a streetcar because of the crowded 603 route he takes at least three times a week. "When they don't have the extra bus you have to stand and I don't like standing close to people."

Ogden City will decide whether it's on board with this streetcar proposal by May 21.
