All our recent rain produced runoff in the Butterfield Creek that seeped down into the irrigation system in parts of Herriman and South Jordan. Crews believe they contained the contaminated water to a farmland at the base of the canyon. Now, the county health department is checking for heavy metal contamination from Kennecott.
“As far as we know, there's no threat to drinking water, there are no orders to boil water. This is mostly water for irrigation purposes and for pastureland but we still take anything like this seriously,” said Salt Lake County Public Works Director Russ Wall.
The county health department took several water samples and the results should be back within this week.
