The family chose the site after it was becoming apparent the Salt Palace Convention Center was too busy to hold another event.
Nearly 25,000 people are expected at the Salt Palace beginning Thursday as part of the national Comicom convention.
The family wanted something more private.
"If anything should have privacy it should be this special funeral for a special man," says Draper Mayor Darrell Smith."So it should go off well. Plans are now underway."
The Maverik Center holds about 12,000 people and officials expect that many people to attend Sgt. Johnson's funeral.
He was killed early Sunday morning when he came across a vehicle parked in Draper. When he approached the vehicle, police say he was still in his vehicle.
Timothy Walker is accused of shooting Sgt. Johnson several times from inside his vehicle. He then is accused of shooting the woman he was with Traci Vaillancort and then turning the gun on himself. Sgt. Johnson died at the hospital. Walker and Vaillancort remain in critical condtition.
Sgt. Johnson's funeral begins at 11 a.m. Friday. An opportunity for viewing will be Thursday night from 6 to 9 p.m.
A funeral procession will take Sgt. Johnson's body to the cemetery. He will be buried in Sandy at Larkin Sunset Gardens.
