SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Have you ever wanted to help Utah families in need, but didn't know where to start? A new foundation may be of help. It's called Ucan Utah.

The first fundraiser for Ucan Utah featuring a yard sale and 5k was held Saturday in Ream’s parking lot in Sandy.

The people behind it delivered their message of hope to those facing unexpected illnesses and other life struggles.

“There are so many families out there that are experiencing trials and difficult situations,” said Rich Dibble. Dibble knows the hardships families can sometimes face. He and his wife spent many nights in the NICU when their children were born. “Our kids are healthy and they're strong now, we met a lot of families that weren’t as fortunate.”

For families with mounting medical bills, Ucan Utah aims to connect those who want to help with those who need it.

“There are a lot of people like that that aren't willing to ask for help and a lot of people in the community want to know how they can help and the Ucan Utah Foundation is the avenue to bring those two people together,” said Dibble.

That avenue connecting people is paved by social media.

“With the power of social media and social networking we really try to get involved with friends and family, anything we can do to get the word out there,” said Dibble.

One of Dibble’s own family members kick-started the project. His dad Dave Dibble, currently battling cancer, is the inspiration behind the group's first 5k.

“He's been a mailman in this area for over 40 years and the 5k today was actually in the area where he delivered mail,” said his son, Rich.

Those who live on Dave's route are cheering on Ucan Utah's mission of delivering hope.

“I’ve had cancer my own self and so I know how important it is to support one another,” said Terry Perry, who attended the fundraiser.
