Mother and son displaced after house fire

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – An elderly woman and her son escaped a house fire Friday morning.

TAYLORSVILLE, UTAH (ABC 4 Utah) - A mother and her son are safe- without injury- after their Taylorsville home caught fire Friday morning. A Murray firefighter was on his way to work when he saw smoke coming from the home. He called the fire in and made sure everyone was safe.

For Bob Nagel, whose home is right next to the destroyed house, the loss of his neighbor’s home is hard to grasp. He tells ABC 4 Utah, “It's kind of a life altering situation when your neighbor’s house burns down. As you saw a while ago my wife is pretty shaken up. It's sad.”

Nagel has known the mother and son who lost their home for 30 years.

He tells us the son cares for his mother and life in the home hasn't been easy after the loss of the father less than a year ago.

Nagel says he was driving home when he saw the smoke and the closer he got the more concerned he became. “It makes you sick to your stomach."

Clint Mecham from the Unified Fire Authorities say most of the damage was limited to the garage and the structure above it.

He says the fire was contained within 15 minutes and was able to be knocked down quickly due to the Murray firefighter who called in the fire after seeing smoke coming from the home.

Mecham says, “He called it into our dispatch center who dispatched an alarm out and also notified the two occupants who were in the house that their house was on fire."

For Nagel, he tells us he is glad his neighbors are safe and the neighborhood is already trying to step up to help. "We have great neighborhood and people have already reached out to help them,” says Nagel.

ABC 4 Utah is told by neighbors the son has been in contact with family out of state. In the mean time the Red Cross is assisting them for their immediate needs.
