PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is working out a few growing pains as its missionary force continues to grow.

The growth was sparked by an October 2012 announcement when President Thomas S. Monson lowered the age for eligible male missionaries from 19 to 18 and from 21 to 19 for women.

Missionary numbers surged. Church spokesman Scott Trotter says about 55,000 missionaries were serving during the November announcement. He says 64,373 missionaries are serving today.

Church leaders are calling about 1,400 missionaries a week, which is too many for the Missionary Training Center in Provo to accommodate with beds.

Extra bunks were moved in, but they're no longer enough. The Church is now preparing to assign missionaries to The Raintree Commons and Wyview Park Apartments about a block west of the MTC.

"I think the world needs love. I think it needs the care and concern that we all have for each other," said Latter-day Saint, Karen Card.

There is no threat to BYU students or others in the apartments. No one will be displaced, according to BYU spokeswoman Cari Jenkins.

Church spokesman Scott Trotter says the missionaries will move into the apartments very soon.

"I think that we are welcome to receive the missionaries here and it's wonderful," said Latter-day Saint Stephanie Robbs who lives in a Raintree Commons apartment.

Missionaries who are preparing to serve an English speaking mission train for two weeks in the MTC.  Missionaries who are learning a foreign language train from 9 to 10 weeks in the MTC.
