The homeowner shot and killed 23 year old Nicholas Monte who police say along with three others broke into the home.
And the homeowner has never contacted police.
It all started Wednesday night in South Salt Lake. Police spokesman Gary Keller talked with reporters that night.
“Dispatch just called,” Keller says. “We have a victim at Pioneer Valley Hospital with a gunshot wound.”
The next day Monte died at the hospital. A neighbor who claimed he grew up with Monte says he was shot in the chest.
“He got shot, shot in the heart, got killed,” says Shane Valdez. “I don't know by who. I don't know what happened. All I know is that he's gone.”
But police say Monte and 22 year old Geno Gonzales were up to no good.
“Monte, Gonzales and two other individuals were planning to do a home invasion robbery of an individual for money and drugs,” says Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department.
The home invasion happened somewhere in the neighborhood near 5400 south and 3200 west in Taylorsville.
“They were armed, forced entry into the home and once they entered that home, somebody inside the home fired a shot striking Monte,” says Lt. Hoyal. “These individuals got him out of the house.”
And Lt. Hoyal says they took him to the hospital. But police have no idea who Monte, Gonzales and the two other suspects were planning to visit. The homeowner never called 911.
“We don't know the exact location of that,” says Lt. Hoyal. “We believe it's somewhere in the area of 5300 South, 3200 West.
And that’s it. Police say the shooting take place Wednesday night around 7-8 p.m. Lt. Hoyal is asking if anyone heard shots fired in their neighborhood or if the homeowner wants to come forward contact Unified Police at 801-743-5844.
