MILLCREEK, Utah (ABC 4 News) – A 12-year-old boy playing with matches in a garage at 4394 South 700 East started his home on Fire Thursday at 12:30 a.m.

Investigators estimate the damage at $250,000.

Neighbors heard a loud explosion believed to be a canister filled with gas near the origin of the fire.

Jason Knudson who lives near the fire said the blast felt like “a quarter stick of dynamite.”

The fire spread to a next door home where Bob Ferris lives with his wife.

The couple began sifting through what is left of their home Thursday afternoon.

They lost everything in the fire but are thankful their Chihuahua dogs helped to spare their lives with their loud barking.

Bob says his dogs prompted him to look outside when he had time to escape with his life.

Jason Knudsen who lives near the house fire says police were in his house when he woke.

“The police came busting through the house saying get up your home is on fire,” Knudsen said.

“All this floor came up here and then up there. I just put all that in,” said Ferris.

The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to Bob’s home. He says, homes have fire insurance policies.
