SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The baby boom generation refuses to grow old. A new poll shows people born between 1947 and 1965 don't consider themselves old and don't plan to retire like their parents did.
Many baby boomers interviewed in a new Associated Press poll released Wednesday said they have no problem working till they're 65 or 70 as long as they're am not lifting boulders. A strong majority of respondents said they are enthusiastic about aging and have less concerns about physical ailments than their parents' generation did.
Tom Beumont also understands that the current status of social security will require him to work longer, but he doesn't mind. "We kind of learned from our parents...we have a more diverse background and we also exercise more so that's more important to us", said Beumont.
Nurse Cindy Black said a lot of the people she sees at the Life Clinic in Provo work too much. “I think we are burning the candle at both ends. They went to bed earlier back then and drank more water,” Black said.
Black said while the baby boomers exercise more than their parents and drink and smoke less, their fast paced life style comes at a price. She said they might end up working themselves to death, literally. "They laugh when I tell them this but they need to go to bed by 10 o’clock."
In addition to more sleep and more water Black said the good health of baby boomers will greatly depend on their mental attitude. "Work needs to be something you love, otherwise we need to be doing something else or doing it less long."
