The second annual Footsteps for Fertility 5k will take place August 31 at Liberty Park. Through raffle, participants have a chance of wining free and discounted in vitro fertilization treatments, which can cost more than $10,000. Most insurance plans do not cover IVF treatments.
Last year’s winners, Ramsi and Brian stoker of Holladay, are now expecting their first baby in August.
“It was a really emotional day because we we're not expecting it, but so excited but also really sad for all the couples there that had probably tried longer than us and maybe put more into it than us that didn't win.”
The Stokers know the pain and frustration that comes with infertility. They'd been trying for nearly five years-- spending $30,000 on treatments including IVF, with no luck.
“I think that is when the biggest devastation came is when we went through the process did it and found out it didn't work,” said Brian.
But thanks to the Footsteps for Fertility 5k they got to give it one more try.
“I was scared that it was going to be the same result, but they called and they had good news for me,” said Ramsi.
Another expectant Utah mom is the inspiration behind the Footsteps for Fertility 5k. Serena Mackerell’s sisters wanted to help her with expensive IVF treatments. Last year they began the 5k, but received a donated IVF cycle from the Utah Fertility Center to give away.
This year, even more treatments will be given out.
All participants will have the opportunity to submit one ticket on behalf of themselves, a friend, or a family member for the chance to win one of the following:
-one complete IVF cycle donated by Dr. Russell Foulk at Utah Fertility Center
-one out of 4 50% off IVF cycles donated by Dr. Heiner at Reproductive Care Center
-one out of 5 $5000 Grants awarded by Footsteps for Fertility Foundation
The prizes will be awarded by random selection following the race. Each registered runner/sleeper will receive 1 ticket in their registration packet and will be able to enter one couple’s name.
