SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Salt Lake International Airport Police have arrested five passengers with guns this month.

They were caught with guns in passenger screening areas.

Each said he forgot he had the gun.

“I think that’s really irresponsible and not knowing that you have it on you,” said airline passenger Katie Doyle.

Patrick Traul was arrested January 9. He said he forgot a loaded handgun was in his brief case.

On January 14 police arrested Joe Walker. He said he forgot his handgun was in his backpack and he used it for protection during a road trip to Arizona.

The following day a TSA agent found a handgun in Courtney Steven’s backpack.

Patrick Byrne was arrested January 16. He told TSA agents he forgot the handgun was in the front pocket of his carry on.

CORRECTION: The broadcast version of this story reports Byrne had a gun in his front pocket.  It was discovered in the pocket of his luggage.

The final arrest was made January 22. Police did not release the suspects name or detailed information before this web story deadline.

“You can’t have a firearm and forget to take a firearm off in a place and have your excuse be I simply forgot,” said airline passenger Landon Putman.

Last year TSA agents found 20 firearms at Salt Lake City International Airport security screening points.

TSA CLARIFIES GUN LAWS IN AIRPORTS:
Firearms, ammunition, firearm parts and realistic replicas of firearms are always prohibited in carry-on baggage. However, these items can be transported in checked baggage provided the traveler declares them to the airline during the ticket counter check-in process, a TSA statement reads.

It continues, Firearms in checked baggage must be unloaded, stored in a locked, hard-sided container. TSA urges passengers to contact their airline for specific firearm and ammunition policies and to check local laws related to the carrying and transportation of firearms.
