Jamie Cheney started the company that can tutor kids from kindergarten all the way through college.
She offers three tips for parents:
- Make homework time fun by appealing to their interests. For instance, if a child is struggling with math, and they're a University of Utah fan, create a big U. Every time they do a problem correctly, fill in a square until the U is complete. You can also find books that interest them, like the American Girl math book. You could also apply math to shopping and fashion.
- Have special homework supplies. That means supplies that you only use for homework, like sidewalk chalk or a white board and marker.
- Enlist a homework buddy. A lot of parents have been out of elementary math and algebra practice for years, which means homework can be frustrating for parents and children. Having a homework buddy come to your home, even once a week, can boost your child's skills and confidence. Whens someone other than a teacher and a parent is able to interact with a student, they can create a connection to a concept and add an additional touch point which will instill confidence and an excitement for learning within your child.
