Ryan Mitchell Schaffer is accused of kidnapping and sexually abusing a 14 year old boy in July.
“(It’s) shocking, very shocking, very hurtful,” says a woman who knows Schaffer.
In fact, the woman who didn’t want to be identified allowed Schaffer and the 14 year old boy stay at her home.
She claimed Schaffer called the boy his cousin.
(Everyone) pretty much believed that,” she says. "He said they had been at a family reunion."
According to police Schaffer kidnapped the teen at a Frontrunner train station in Ogden. The affidavit says Schaffer "produced a knife to intimidate the victim” and for 3 days the boy "was sodomized and was threatened at gunpoint to do this."
Police say the boy escaped and Schaffer is nowhere to be found.
“Anybody that would kidnap a kid like that is a danger,” says John Harvey with the Ogden police department. “That's why we even have a sex offender registry because most of these people can be a danger.”
Harvey says there was already a warrant for his arrest because he failed to be at his home where he is registered to live.
As for the homeowner where Schaffer was staying, she finds it all puzzling. She says the teen never did appear to be in distress.
“No, no and he'd come up the stairs alone a couple of times and he never said anything," the woman says.
Schaffer is on the sex offender registry for a crime involving a minor six years ago. And in 2013, he’s been charged with violating terms required of a convicted sex offender. Wednesday Schaffer was charged with aggravated kidnapping and unlawful sex with a minor.
After learning what Schaffer's accused of the homeowner is having second thoughts about the man who stayed at her house.
“I don't know, it's sick, it's wrong,” she says.
