In 1963 an act of Congress officially authorized the Let Freedom Ring National Bell Ringing Ceremony. This year is the 50th anniversary of the patriotic resolution that honors the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The resolution stated that "Whereas the tolling of the liberty Bell at Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pa. at 2 o'clock in the afternoon on the 4th day of July, 1776, proclaimed the signing of the Declaration of Independence…." Each year bells should ring throughout the country at 2pm eastern daylight savings time.
At noon at the Hill AFB Museum’s Nate Mazer Memorial WW2 Chapel, the Air Force Association Northern Utah Chapter led Utah’s participation of the “Let Freedom Ring” by ringing the church bell 13 times; one for each of the 13 colonies.
Over 10,000 groups are expected to participate. National participants include the National Cathedral in Washington DC, the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, the Old North Church in Boston, and Arlington Cemetery.
